Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, her grandmother, and godparents. Her father abandoned her family. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder that was rooted in words as a young teenager. Ford was attracted to acting in her teenage years and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she realized that the school was not suitable for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get an acceptance on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring on Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate first appeared on television in the year 1991, appearing on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. The regular theatre work she performed brought her into The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate was recognized for her stand-up comedy, which was added to her portfolio in 1996.
